NOTES FROM THE CLUB CAPTAIN
This year for the first time we are running a two day National Flygility Event on the 30th and 31st of July as a winter event . We run a two dayer in December but have only done one dayers in winter. The Sport of Flygility allows us to belong to a parent organisation, the New Zealand Flygility Dog Association (NZFDA), This National Body is going to hold it's AGM on the Saturday evening of our Tournament. Apart from the list of things above we also require people power to run this two day event. Please contact me Debbie on txt 021 2331227 or Raewyn on txt 027 7593005 if you have any spare time on Friday 29th, Saturday 30th or Sunday 31st of July to help out on the courses. No previous experience necessary as we will show you what is to be done but we do need to know who is coming and when.
These National Events are a crucial part of our funding for the Club each year. The money raised helps us to improve our equipment and maintain our Club. Please come and enjoy your involvement with your Dog Training friends. Looking forward to seeing you there. Of course there is nothing to stop you coming down to wander around and look at all the fun the dogs from around NZ are having at our Club.
FLYGILITY THE SPORT
For me Flygility features all the things that I like to see average people with average dogs doing just for the fun of it. First of all your dog has to be able to work for you without reaction to other dogs and people around it and we all know how hard that can be to achieve. Once you are there then you need to be able to teach your dog to run off to a fixed point and run back. We do it at the Club as a speed test called sprints, which we time and you will see the results each month either in the newsletter or on the notice board at the Club. There are some fabulous junior dogs doing Sprints and really getting great times. As you graduate through sprints you get handicapped by a set of equipment which enables your dog to learn to go away through hurdles, tunnels etc and come back on it's own through that equipment. then the dog needs to learn to hit a Flygility box which bounces a ball out when the dog jumps on the pedal. At this point your dog needs to learn to carry the ball through the equipment back to you. So a run of 30 meters through the equipment to the box get the ball and run back without missing the equipment all the way to you.
Now comes the big challenge.! There are two lanes. In the other lane starting at the same time as you, is another dog . The call goes out ARE YOU READY 3 2 1 GO and the dogs are off racing side by side to their own box to get the ball and be the first dog to complete without fault.
Once a dog is able to compete without leaving its lane then you can join the New Zealand Flygility Dog Association and play the game around New Zealand gaining titles for 20 points FD (Flygility Dog), FDX(Flygility Dog Excellent) FDCH(Flygility Champion)
A lot of people take this sport incredibly seriously. But for me is it is just a progression of training and game playing for the dog. It is huge fun, the dogs absolutely love it. The ribbons are pretty to hang in the house. What other thing can you do with the average NZ mongrel pet from the SPCA that earns you a lovely ribbon to skite off to your friends.
If your dog does show high levels of skill at the game I am very happy to coach you to succeed at high levels. You and your dog will achieve good fitness levels, you will be around people who love their pet dog as much as you do. the great thing about this sport apart from being out in the fresh air with your dog, is that anyone can do this. Being disabled or elderly or very young does not exclude you from this sport. You are not doing the running, your dog is. our dog can learn to play this game on his own and you can stand or sit back and watch him enjoying himself.
If you would like more information about Flygility please give me a call and I will spend time with you and your dog assessing his abilities and helping you to achieve the simple first steps to a great Sport open to all New Zealand Dogs and People of all shapes and sizes. Come and have a look at Flygility at the Stock Car Club Grounds Saturday 30th and Sunday 31st.
See you there.
Raewyn
